I t’s the year 2005. In Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen the European Cup tournament takes place according to the usual formula: eight national champions in two groups, with the number one teams competing in the fi nal on Whit Monday. Usually the host team wins and virtually every year the representatives from the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and England occupy the fi rst four places. This weekend is no exception. Amsterdam H&BC, the organisers of the event, beat Reading from England in the fi nal with 1-0. This is cause for a celebration, naturally. But unbeknown to the participants and spectators, that very same weekend behind the scenes, the death-knell for the European Cup tournament has already sounded. What had been a trailblazing idea in 1969 and an event that had been offi cially recognised by the EHF in 1974, had become a wornout formula in the new millennium. There would still be editions in 2006 and 2007. In the autumn of 2007 however, we experienced the advent of the new Euro Hockey League of which the fi fth edition is currently moving towards its climax.
