With 24 goals in 19 EHL duels, the Rotterdam team captain has exceptional stats to show off. “The nice thing about the EHL is that you play against teams from many different countries, and they all have their own hockey culture and way of playing. In the Dutch Rabo Hockey League, you sort of know what to expect. In a European context that is much less predictable. This makes it a lot of fun. What is a Spanish defence like? How will the Germans attack? What will the Belgians be up to? It’s often a surprise. That is also true the other way around of course. Apparently they still don’t know how to stop Jeroen Hertzberger. Things have gone very well for me for the past four years in the EHL, haha!” Every duel is a fi nal Amsterdam-coach Taco van den Honert is also eager to talk about the way the EHL is set up. In his illustrious career as an active hockey player he experienced the old-style European Cup. The mastermind behind the sleeppush – drag fl ick – played (and lost) three European club team fi nals. “Back then you played one weekend of hockey during Whitsun and that was the entire European Cup.
