64 just one camera that captured the entire playing fi eld from above. Now they have cameras in the goal, another one at the centre line, and two at the 23-meter line. The last two cameras minutely capture everything that is going on around the all-important circle. Now it’s possible for even laymen to see and understand why the arbitrator whistles. This is essential to keep the viewer interested and keep him from tuning out”, says the goalie of the Netherlands national team. English lying in wait for EHL victory The victories in the previous four editions of the EHL have been divided amongst the teams of the two hockey superpowers: Germany and the Netherlands. The English however, who won the European title for national teams in 2009, are dreaming of a coup in the EHL. The British participant, Beeston HC, is clearly busy with developing a long term plan. “We can certainly compete on the same level of play”, says Matt Taylor, who is active as a player/coach along with Martin Jones. “This season we have already won against the strong Spanish team RC de Polo de Barcelona with 3-1. In Rotterdam we want to survive the KO16 and at least make the semi-fi nals. Victory this year would probably be a bit unrealistic because we have a relatively young team.” The Barça of European Matt Taylor, coach/ player from Beeston HC, uses EHL hockey to heighten the profi le of his club. y The EHL is a good MATT TAYLOR hockey This youthful élan mainly has to do with the philosophy espoused by Taylor and his club. “Beeston HC gives a great deal of attention to training youthful players. Since I stopped playing as an English international in 2008, I have been dedicated to attending to and training players as well as coaches. I do this with my company MT13. My dream is to train the young players at Beeston HC and turn them into top level players for their own fi rst level team. What Barcelona is doing with their own youth in pro-football we want to create for European club platform for Beeston HC to heighten its profi le hockey.” Beeston HC is currently already playing virtually with their ‘own’ resources. “In the fi rst round we had German input, Patrick Schmidt, but he probably won’t be with us in Rotterdam. If we want to win the EHL we will need a few international top-players. By playing well this year and showing our potential we will make it interesting for strong foreign players to come to Beeston HC. As far as that is concerned, the EHL is a good platform for us to heighten our profi le.” • FOTO: FRANK UIJLENBROEK Pagina 63
