18 20 08 20 09 Because UHC performs very well not only in Europe but also in Germany, the team participates in the second EHL edition as well. UHC’s performance in Europe in the 2008/2009 season on the other hand, is by no means convincing. In the French city of Lille this champion team is clobbered by Polo, the Spanish team by 4-1. When the host Lille is beaten a day later, the Germans escape an inglorious retreat. Lille is left with an unsettling ‘fi rst’ from this weekend on their home turf. The French formation is the fi rst host team to fail to survive the group phase competition. The men from Atletic Terrassa – quarter fi nalists one season earlier – also exit the European club tournament through the back door. The Belgian team Leuven and the Three Rock Rovers from Ireland remain for the Catalans to contend with. There is good news for Amsterdam H&BC in the fi rst round which is their debut in the EHL. They work off a fl awless group phase, during which they easily win. Rotterdam and Bloemendaal, the two other Dutch participating teams, also qualify for the knockout phase. Surprisingly two of the three German teams are not as successful. Club an der Alster and HC Düsseldorf cannot follow the example set by UHC and for them the EHL is over after two games. The biggest surprise this European hockey edition is provided by the Belgians. The fact that Leuven, an unknown quantity until then, had made it to the 1/8 fi nals was quite clever but it is a complete sensation when they manage to win both the 1/8 fi nals and the quarter fi nals during the KO16. Nobody would have bet on it that Leuven would succeed in reaching the EHL fi nal four. Bloemendaal wins the EHL cup in a exhilarating fi nal against UHC. Rotterdam, 2009.
