Congresverslag 17th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS), 4–7 July 2012, Bruges – Belgium Sport Science in the Heart of Europe Door: Kelly Ickmans & Margot De Kooning Bruges to share their knowledge about topics such as exercise in extreme environments, sports nutrition, injury prevention, sports biomechanics, neuromuscular control, sports and disease, sports and pedagogy, sports and economy, and much more. On the 4th of July, the ECSS 2012 congress in Bruges was launched. A lot of young and more experienced speakers took the fl oor in the oral presentations and invited symposia. The fi rst congress day was continued with a plenary session on cycling economy chaired by Prof. Dr. Paul From the 4th until the 7th of July 2012 the annual congress of the ECSS took place for the 17th time. This year the congress was held in the historical city of Bruges (Belgium), ‘the Venice of the North’, and was hosted by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles together with the Howest University College West Flanders. The ‘Oud Sint-Jan’ congress centre, which is located in the medieval quarter of the city, served as this year’s congress venue. “Sport Science in the Heart of Europe” was chosen as the theme of the 17th annual congress of the ECSS. With 4 plenary sessions, 36 invited symposia, 444 oral presentations, and more than 1200 poster presentations, the ECSS 2012 congress was an extraordinary experience for every sport scientist. Experts from all over the world came to 38 Sport & Geneeskunde | augustus 2012 | nummer 3 De Knop, Rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and with Prof. Dr. David Martin, Prof. Dr. Wim Lagae and Dr. Trudo Dejonghe as keynote speakers. During this fi rst scientifi c highlight of the congress Prof. Dr. David Martin gave a sport scientifi c view on the fi rst Australian victory in the Tour de France, the 2011 victory of Cadel Evans. He concluded that it is likely that supportive but incredibly competitive and challenging environmental infl uences such as altitude training, resistance training, heat acclimatisation, and tapering contributed substantially to Evans’ victory in the Tour de France 2011. Prof. Dr. Wim Lagae and Dr. Trudo Dejonghe fi nished the session by giving a business network view on professional road cycling. During the opening ceremony Guest of Honour Dr. Michel D’Hooghe emphasized the importance of science in sport. Finally, this fi rst successful congress day was ended with a welcome reception and the opening of the exhibition. Pagina 37
