20 Germans easily advance to the quarter-fi nals. There an abrupt end comes to their tournament. Contrary to all expectations RC Polo places itself for the semi-fi nals at the expense of Rot-Weiss. Just before the end of the game Pau Quemada, the Spanish star player, decides the exciting duel in his team’s favour with 3-2. The champion team Bloemendaal also meets its Waterloo in the quarter-fi nals where they face an old rival: UHC. After seventy steaming minutes the teams are tied 3-3. Shootouts are required to determine the winner and the Germans take the opportunity to get revenge for their lost fi nal a year before. Despite Bloemendaal’s defeat there is still a success for the Netherlands. Actually there are two successes. Amsterdam rids itself of Leuven in the quarter-fi nals and Rotterdam beats Atletic Terrassa to proceed to the fi nal four. The excitement in the semi-fi nals is also palpable. UHC is only able to put an end to RC Polo’s dreams after successful shoot-outs, placing themselves in line for the fi nal for the third time in a row. After HGC and Bloemendaal they now face Rotterdam. Coach Hans Streeder’s men have settled their accounts with Amsterdam in their favour in a scorching game. A starring role was reserved for international Jeroen Hertzberger. The forward has made three goals including the winning goal. So, Rotterdam is fi nally over its semi-fi nal trauma, but, another trauma crops up to take its place. To the credit of UHC-defense Patrick Breitenstein – who scores twice – UHC wins with 3-1, making it possible for the Hamburg club to once again place the European Cup in their trophy cabinet. 20 10 20 11 On season later, the EHL-circus pitches its tents in Eindhoven for the fi rst time. Oranje Zwart has its debut before a local Audience amidst the European elites, although ‘elite’ might not be exactly the right term. The team from Eindhoven has absolutely no diffi culties in the group phase. Pomorzanin Turun (10-1) and Dinamo Kazan (7-2) are crushed by the Dutch newcomers. There is a shower of goals in the other games played in the fi rst round as well. HGC overwhelms the Ukranian team Olimpia Kolos Sekvoia with 9-2 and clears out East Grinstead in the British private party against Kelburne: 8-1. However, the highest score is made by Bloemendaal. The former team of coach Max Caldas, who became coach for the Dutch national women’s team half-way through the season, and who was succeeded by Dave Smolenaars, takes over as record-holder for the most scored goals from Rot-Weiss Köln in Terrassa. They win with no less than 12-0 against Stroitel Brest – the fi rst EHL-participant from Belarus. As luck would have it, Bloemendaal has to face UHC again in the 1/8 fi nals which is a duel that defi nitely has come to be regarded as an EHL classic. Partially due to home-game advantage – the KO16 takes place at Bloemendaal’s home fi eld – they are able to beat UHC: 2-1. Besides UHC the other two German teams, Mannheim and Rot-Weiss Köln, go down early in the tournament, which means not a single German team makes it to the last eight. The rookie Dragons from Belgium, which had thrown the team from Cologne out of the tournament, just managed to make it to the quarter fi nals. There however, the Belgians lose out after a thrilling performance by Reading. The Dragons had succeeded in making the score (22) just before the end of the regular game time, but lost out to the Brits in the shoot-outs. In the meantime the mood of the home-team Bloemendaal has gone through the fl oor. After winning against UHC the national champions hoped to also win the quarter-fi nals in front of their home fans, but the mission turns out to be a miserable failure. After a scorching-hot game Oranje Zwart proves to be better in the shootouts. Pagina 19
